Dad—Today would have been your 64th birthday. Thank you for everything. And thank you for all the things I never thanked you for.

I’m sorry if the last pic of you wearing the Italian grandma’s pink apron is a little embarrassing, but I can’t recall you ever being embarrassed about much—and that was the last time we ever hugged.

That was the day I left you at the rehab community in a little village on a mountaintop in central Italy. But, like the priest there told me, I was really leaving you in God’s hands.

That was all I could do at that point.

A year or so later, you left this world far too young, although most of your 57 years were spent making people smile. And you tried the hardest with me. I’m sorry for resisting your infectious joy sometimes. I regret those times, because some of my favorite memories are of laughing with you.

I love you, Dad. I miss you. Catch ya later.

Right now I’m somewhere over the ocean, halfway between two continents. Snapped this pic of @mco_airport during takeoff. Feeling like I’m embarking on something of a “walkabout,” I wanted to share three favorite quotes from the late Christopher McCandless, a young man who shunned modern-day expectations and became a drifter.

He took the name Alexander Supertramp as he hitchhiked his way to Alaska, where, sadly, he died alone in the wilderness in 1992. His diary, however, was full of life, and the book partially based on it (#intothewild by Jon Krakauer) inspired me (at 18 years old) to journey to Alaska where I briefly worked as a fishing guide.

I can relate to Christopher’s wanderlust, and also to his contradictory realization that “happiness is only real when shared.” The wilderness and its solitude is tempting when life feels heavy, but eventually you’ll hear the wolves howling their advice… “Be as we are. Made this weird little animation based on an actual experience I had in the South Pacific years ago when I went #snorkeling one evening in #Rarotonga lagoon. Took my time admiring the coral and creatures. Then something whizzed past me in the water, swung around again, and bit my arm! I looked down to see a deep little bite mark bleeding into the water quite a bit. And then I noticed a small triggerfish darting around me rapidly. It veered towards me in a flash—and this time he bit my chest. I probably cursed at him through my snorkel, but I was honestly pretty terrified—the triggerfish had no fear, and in a way it was TOO small to fight off, and far too fast. The little monster made several more passes and followed me as I swam to shore, frantically splashing. Probably looked like I was being chased by a great white. Apparently somehow I had triggered that triggerfish—maybe just by invading “his” lagoon, or maybe he’s the local hothead of the reef. He’s just lucky I didn’t have a speargun. But who knows, we’re both a little older and more mature now, so maybe if I ever return to the beautiful Cook Islands, my little attacker and I will bury the hatchet over a bowl of kava. #oceanart #marineart #deepseacreatures #oceanlife
